A city transformed

As soon as visitors enter Chalon-sur-Saône around mid-July, they notice a palpable change. The cobbled streets of the historic centre, dotted with lively terraces, are adorned with artistic installations: bleachers, ephemeral structures, colourful signage. The air vibrates with a gentle effervescence. Here, the ordinary gives way to the extraordinary: the whole city becomes a stage, and anyone who passes through these streets becomes a spectator, an accomplice, and sometimes an actor in an unprecedented sensory and cultural experience.

Created in 1987, Chalon dans la Rue is now recognised as one of the leading international festivals dedicated to the performing arts in public spaces. Its strength? Its openness, both to the public and to a wide variety of artistic forms.

The spirit and originality of a festival

The festival doesn’t just put on one performance after another. Above all, it embodies a state of mind resolutely focused on encounters and discovery. Chalon dans la Rue seeks to encourage contemporary creation off the beaten track, cultivating artistic diversity as much as intergenerational and inclusive elements, to the astonishment of all. Young and old, enlightened amateurs and simple strollers all come together for moments of sharing and wonder.

In this vast urban theatre, dotted with parks and squares, art and society are in direct dialogue, with many of the shows exploring the city, living together, ecology and solidarity. The city vibrates with a joyous artistic commitment, reflecting a society in search of links and meaning.

A rich programme

The diversity of the programme is what makes Chalon dans la Rue so famous and attractive. Nearly 150 companies from France, Europe and around the world are invited to each edition. The festival is structured around two complementary selections: the IN, which brings together around twenty companies to present shows that are often new or created especially for Chalon; and the OFF, a veritable breeding ground for new discoveries, where around a hundred companies, selected through a call for applications, take over every corner of the city.

The disciplines represented cover the whole spectrum of the street arts: theatre, circus, puppetry, dance, visual and digital installations, music and hybrid performances. Around a thousand performances are free or open to the public over the four days, and only a few of the IN shows require advance booking. Accessibility is one of the festival’s hallmarks: allowing everyone to be surprised, to stop off on the fly or to build their own personal itinerary as they wander around.

Every year, there are many highlights: evolving creations, spectacular night-time shows, participatory events that bring all audiences together… The 2025 edition will be no exception, with several world premieres, immersive formats and happenings that shake up the boundaries between audience and artists.

A unique urban scenography

Chalon dans la Rue takes over every part of the urban fabric. The emblematic squares – Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, Place Saint-Vincent in front of the majestic cathedral, the square in front of the Musée Nicéphore Niepce – are the setting for large-scale popular gatherings. Pedestrianised streets become poetic corridors, populated by artists in motion. Some shows are staged in shady parks, others under marquees erected in the city centre.

At night, the magic happens: illuminated events, concerts under the stars and pyrotechnic displays grace the city, offering unforgettable tableaux vivants. For many of the city’s regulars, it’s at the heart of this exhilarating nightlife that memories are made and the most memorable encounters take place, imbued with a wide range of emotions.

The festival also features a number of convivial venues, including themed food courts, temporary bars, family zones and markets for local craftspeople and producers.

At the crossroads of tourism and the artistic experience

The success of Chalon dans la Rue is largely due to its ability to combine artistic discovery with the promotion of local heritage. Exploring the town as you watch the shows also means taking a plunge into a listed historic centre, where medieval architecture, Renaissance facades and quaysides on the banks of the Saône are revealed around every corner.

The tourist dimension is omnipresent. The festival benefits from a wide range of accommodation: hotels, bed and breakfasts, youth hostels. Some locals offer to host artists and visitors for the duration of the event. Restaurants vie with each other to offer special menus and regional products, while temporary markets showcase local creators and know-how.

Getting to the festival is easy: Chalon is centrally located between the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté regions, just 1 hour 15 minutes from Lyon and 2 hours 20 minutes from Paris by train , and the town has all the facilities you need (park-and-ride facilities, multilingual tourist information, places to meet and mingle, etc.).

Behind the scenes of an ambitious organisation

Behind the success of Chalon dans la Rue lies the work of the Centre National des Arts de la Rue et de l’Espace Public (CNAREP1), which manages the programming and logistics. Nearly 500 volunteers join the adventure every year, providing reception, security and cultural mediation. A number of measures have been put in place to ensure accessibility for families and people with disabilities.

This teamwork creates an atmosphere of solidarity and hospitality, reinforcing the festival’s reputation as a space for democratic and popular artistic experimentation.

An exceptional event not to be missed

Chalon dans la Rue is more than just a cultural event. It’s an invitation to experience the city in a different way, to be amazed, to explore new forms of expression, to dialogue and exchange in a unique atmosphere. Join us from 17 to 20 July 2025 to immerse yourself in this creative whirlwind where everyday life, for the space of a few days, is transformed into poetry and celebration.

The Chalon Festival in practice

Some basic and practical advice:

  • Consult the programme in advance
With the abundance of offers, it is advisable to consult the programme published on the official website as early as June, to find out the times and venues and, if necessary, to book for the IN part of the Chalon dans la Rue festival.
  • Get there early!
Some very popular shows sell out quickly. Strolling around in the morning allows you to enjoy the city before the rush.

  • Walk or cycle
The streets in the centre become pedestrianised during the event, and many facilities make it difficult to get around by car. A number of cycle hire points and car parks are available.
  • Dress appropriately
A hat, water bottle and sun cream during the day and a light jacket in the evening are essential for comfortable sailing. Don’t forget to check the weather forecast, as a mackintosh may come in handy 🙂
  • Enjoy the nightlife
The city lights up at nightfall, with a host of events in its streets and squares, offering a different and often magical sensory experience.
