Did you say intelligence?

Presentation of the 2025 theme for the Fête de la Science in France:

Every day, the news highlights both the achievements and the dangers of the spectacular development of artificial intelligence (AI). At the centre of fierce global competition, AI is making inroads into every field, opening the door to a new revolution. Having become more ‘intelligent’ than humankind, could the machine one day surpass humankind? But what kind of intelligence are we talking about?

For a long time, intelligence was seen as a human attribute. At the beginning of the 20th century, intelligence became palpable, almost mathematical, with the introduction of the concept of the intelligence quotient. Intelligence was then reduced to a number. The latest scientific advances show that it exists in forms as varied as they are nuanced. From the behaviour of cells to the astonishing capacities of plants, from the cognitive prowess of animals to the emergence of AI, the notion of intelligence manifests itself in many ways and challenges our thinking.

The 2025 edition of the Fête de la science invites the public to explore all forms of intelligence and to rethink what it means to be intelligent, beyond human boundaries.
