Bellegarde-sur-Valserine SNCF station?
Located in the new commune of Valserhône 1, Bellegarde-sur-Valserine to be precise, Bellegarde SNCF station is a major rail hub in the Ain département, close to the Swiss border and Lake Geneva 2. It is at the crossroads of the Lyon-Perrache / Geneva and Bourg-en-Bresse / Bellegarde lines, and just before the line to the southern shores of Lake Geneva. Located on the heights in the centre of the delegated town of Bellegarde, it is of strategic importance, particularly as a crossing point for the many cross-border commuters working in the Geneva region.
Inaugurated in 1858, the station has undergone a number of changes, including a complete rebuild in 1907 following a fire that destroyed the original building. In 2010, the station underwent a major overhaul to become a multimodal hub that can accommodate regional trains (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Léman Express LEX 3 ), TGV high-speed trains to Geneva, as well as local and departmental buses 4 and regional express coaches 5. Combining modernity, accessibility and integration into its environment, it features an innovative new passenger building in the form of a translucent dome designed according to bioclimatic principles.
The station serves around 1,800,000 passengers a year, the vast majority of them on the TER/LEX* network, with frequent services to Geneva in less than 30 minutes, and to Lyon, Nice, Grenoble and Paris on the TGV Lyria 6 service in less than 3 hours. It also serves many regional and national destinations, with a mixed TGV, TER and Léman Express service.
