The Salève and its cable car

The Salève has fascinated visitors since the early 20th century. Nicknamed Geneva’s balcony because of its view over the city and Lake Geneva, this mountain dominates the region, with a unique massif between the Jura and Pre-Alps peaking at 1 ,379 metres 1.

The construction of the cable car, inaugurated in 1932, opened the doors of this exceptional natural area to a wide public, facilitating access to its summit. It played a major role in the development of mountain tourism and mountaineering, with the birth of rock-climbing.

Prior to this, the Salève 2 railway, often referred to as the Salève funicular, was an electric rack railway that took passengers up the mountain. The train ran from 1892 to 1935.

Today, the Salève cable car, which has recently been modernised and made safe, is the gateway to a Natura 2000 listed natural site, welcoming hikers, families and the curious in search of an escape. Open to the public all year round, the timetables adapt to the seasons.
