The first river navigation simulator is now up and running, and it’s the Rhône that has the privilege of being virtualised!
Let’s find out more about this training tool dedicated to the river transport industry.

The Rhône is renowned for being a tempestuous river that is difficult to navigate, particularly given the variations in flow with the seasons and the tributaries it crosses on its way to the Mediterranean.
The 1st river navigation simulator
Several organisations have joined forces to organise the development of the first river navigation simulator:
The Compagnie Nationale du Rhône (CNR), the Comité des Armateurs Fluviaux (CAF), the Centre d’Etudes et d’Expertise sur les Risques, l’Environnement (CEREMA), the Promofluvia association and Voies Navigables de France (VNF).

A unique river navigation simulator
This simulation tool, the only one of its kind in France, will enable future pilots of boats, barges and other large motorised craft to practise river driving on one of France’s largest waterways.
This exceptional learning tool covers 70 kilometres along the Rhône and its main tributary the Saône, with 9 tricky sites listed, 15 simulation sections and numerous modifiable parameters:
Different flow rates, weather, day and night driving, types of boats and loads…
The 240° cabin offers a panoramic view with a multitude of scenarios to enhance the know-how of the sailors and simulate wheelhouse conditions as closely as possible for the learners.

Video presentation of the simulator
Based at the Edouard Herriot port of Lyon, this simulator will be used for the ongoing training of existing boat, barge and barge pilots, with the ultimate aim of training new drivers at a rate of 25 pilots and captains a year.
